AstroWatt

Taking Heriot-Watt to space

AstroWatt is a group of like-minded students at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh who are passionate about the peaceful development and exploration of space. In 2025, the founding groups Heriot-Watt CanSat Team, Heriot-Watt Rocketry Society, and Watts-Up realised that there was an unprecedented opportunity for knowledge and resource sharing across their respective societies, and so AstroWatt was born. By sharing PCB designs, software, and engineering resources, every member group gets to avoid reinventing the wheel and focus on those elements of their mission that truly matter.

What we do

AstroWatt aims to support students at Heriot-Watt University with their own space-related projects and to popularise space engineering among the next generation, such as the event at the Dirleton Solar Walk in April 2025. AstroWatt helps co-ordinate funding, opportunities, and technical knowhow across member groups.

Our groups

The AstroWatt CanSat Team competes in the Mach-X series of CanSat competitions. Previously successful in the American Aeronautical Society's CanSat competition, we hope to make an impact closer to home.

Watts-Up is a group of students working to harness high altitude ballooning for demonstration of novel technologies and scientific research in the stratosphere.
